Members of the 6th Communication Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group, Marine Forces Reserve, a Marine Corps Reserve unit out of Brooklyn, N.Y., participating in Combined Endeavor, remembered Sept. 11 with a ceremony at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Grafenwoehr, Germany.

Service members from many of the countries participating in Combined Endeavor took part in honoring the victims of Sept. 11 and three members of 6th Comm Bn, who lost their lives during the attacks.

Sgt. Maj. Michael Curtin, Gunnery Sgt. Matthew Garvey and Sgt. Charlie Anaya were members of 6th Comm Bn as well as the New York City Fire Department when they were killed in the attacks.

The ceremony began at 8:46 a.m., also known as the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower.

An invocation followed the chaplain for the Grafenwoehr Training Area. A wreath was laid in remembrance for the victims of Sept. 11 in which all service members rendered a hand salute while taps played, followed by a moment of silence.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas Hoare, 6th Comm Bn officer-in-charge of the Marine detachment participating in Combined Endeavor, addressed everyone who took part in the ceremony.

Although the events of Sept. 11 took place in the United States, more than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Hoare read off the list of countries that were participating in Combined Endeavor who had lost countrymen during Sept. 11.

Countries mentioned were Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Portugal.
