The Armed Forces of Liberia moved a step closer to operational independence with a change-of-command ceremony on 11 Dec 2013. Lt. Col. Daniel Ziankahn assumed command of the 23rd Brigade Headquarters from the outgoing commander Col. Audo of the Nigerian Army for the first time in Operation ONWARD LIBERTY history. U.S. Marine Forces Europe and Africa-led Operation ONWARD LIBERTY has been advising the AFL since 2010 in Monrovia, Liberia, with mentorship and assistance as the local force seeks to develop a national military that is responsible, operationally capable, and is a force-for-good among the Liberian people.
